Tis the Season

Christmas has come and gone again. I always find the day after Christmas to be a little sad and empty. There’s so much build up to the day. When it passes, the anxiety and anticipation is gone for yet another year, which leaves a little emptiness. It is, however, a good day for humble reflection. Time to marvel at the fortune of life’s circumstances and devise focus for the coming year.

As usual, my family and friends spoiled me like ancient royalty and left me feeling unworthy. I am the lucky recipient of the following items: a Christmas themed cookbook, a set of wicker baskets, a red hooded sweatshirt, two Christmas ornaments, a Christmas bell (part of an annual collection), a green throw, a Christmas apron, coffee samplers (2), a coffee cup warmer, 2 bags of Dunkin Donuts unground coffee beans, a peppermint scented footcare kit, a black sweater, a framed photo of Mike and me, a gift certificate to Honey Baked ham, candles (2), a tin of fudge, a cookie jar, a family history parchment (to be filled in by me), a 1976 Chicago and Suburbs Streets Guide, and gifts certificates and money that that will be applied to a dinner at TGIFridays, a spatula, a wooden spoon, and a three-tiered cooling rack from Kohl’s, a keyboard and mouse for Mike, a new monitor for me, new shock mounts for our mics for America’s Debate Radio, and also likely cables for the show. I am certain I’m missing items and for that I’m a jerk.

This year, we made 15 plates of cookies. Each plate held 12 different kinds including, Chocolate Sprinkles, Kaleidoscope Cookies, Snickerdoodles, Candy Canes Cookies, Toffee Bars, Jan Hagel, Chocolate Pinwheels, Pecan Balls, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Choco-caramel Delights, Peanut Butter Kisses, and Molasses Jumbles. We also made Triple Layer Chocolate Mints. They didn’t set up right, so Mike and I kept them to ourselves and have been eating off of it for the last few weeks; still quite delicious. We’ve been baking all month, one of my favorite parts of this holiday.

2007 is just around the corner now. I look forward to a quiet night of hiding from gunfire. Always a good way to ring in a new year. Cheers.
