Happy Hallmark Day!

Mike is a lucky man. Yet another February 14th has come and pretty much gone and he hasn’t felt guilt or pressure to do anything above and beyond the call of duty to profess his love for me. He did buy us two pounds of fresh strawberries…for no other reason than that they were on sale. ;)

Frankly, I’ve never understood the hype behind Valentine’s Day. Ladies, are we really that insecure that we need to designate a love holiday to demand our men treat us like the goddesses that we are? If your man is not treating you like a queen 365 you’re out of luck anyway. One day a year won’t make up for it.

The last time I ‘celebrated’ Valentine’s day was as a kid and had to exchange cards with the class at the designated Valentine’s Day party. By the time I was in elementary school political correctness had just started to creep in (think ‘I’d like to give the world a Coke’) so we had to give cards to everyone. Reagan era public grade schoolers everywhere were momentarily spared the bitter lessons of loneliness and isolation during the class Valentine’s Day party.

I remember the careful process of choosing my cards in the store – would it be Barbie or Strawberry Shortcake this year? Maybe go out on a limb and opt for those rebellious Punky Brewster cards? Then onto the even more selective process of dividing up the cards to make sure you didn’t accidentally hand out a card that implied anything you didn’t want implicated. No overly mushy ones for that boy that was always picking his nose. The coolest card in the box to your very best friend. The ‘accidental’ forgetting of a card for that one girl who stole your garbage pail kids earlier in the year. Bitch. Toss in those disgusting Necco wafer heart shaped ‘Be Mine’ candies, rice crispie treats with entirely too much red food coloring sporting red-hots on top, and a handful of room mothers freaking out that there aren’t enough napkins and we have the elementary essence of my Hallmark holidays past.

Be Mine. Love You. Kiss Me. Sweet Talk. Be True.
